I once heard that if the entire span of earth's existence would be condensed into one day, the presence of human life would take up only the last twenty minutes. Wish I could know for certain what the previous 23 hours and 40 minutes were like. Life is short. Do what you like.

So I've actually learned something in class this semester. Cactus spines are specialized leaves that serve two purposes. The first--and most obvious--is for protection. The second is that their small surface are (compared to all other leaves) limits water loss--something necessary in the desert. Also, since its leaves cannot absorb sunlight, a cactus' trunk is specialized to be the main photosynthesizing agent, thus their green color.
