Shield

So I've actually learned something in class this semester. Cactus spines are specialized leaves that serve two purposes. The first--and most obvious--is for protection. The second is that their small surface are (compared to all other leaves) limits water loss--something necessary in the desert. Also, since its leaves cannot absorb sunlight, a cactus' trunk is specialized to be the main photosynthesizing agent, thus their green color.
